Purpose
In a cross-sectional study of 9th-grade students, girls reported significantly lower mathematics self-efficacy and state self-esteem compared with boys, although their academic achievement in mathematics did not differ significantly (Raufelder et al., Frontiers in Psychology, 2020).Results from the Girls’ Index national survey indicated that only 59% of adolescent girls reported feeling proficient in mathematics and science in 2022, a decline from 73% in 2017. In the same survey, 58% of girls reported believing they were not smart enough to pursue their desired careers, compared with 46% in 2017 (Ruling Our eXperiences [ROX], 2022). Our club seeks to close the confidence gap by helping younger girls develop belief in their own abilities while gaining early exposure to STEM concepts. By learning alongside girl friends in a supportive community, participants can share experiences, practice teamwork, and encourage one another. Through mentorship, engaging discussions, and approachable activities, we aim to normalize the idea that girls can thrive in science and mathematics. The focus is not only on understanding STEM topics but also on reshaping self perception, so that girls see themselves as confident, capable, and free to pursue opportunities in these fields.
