Falun Dafa

Falun Dafa is an ancient meditation practice in the Buddha school tradition; at the core of the practice are the values of Truthfulness, Compassion and Forbearance, which act as a guide for daily life and practice. Through tranquil meditations and an emphasis on the elevation of one’s heart-mind character, Falun Dafa has brought health and well-being to more than 100 million people in 100 countries around the world. Falun Dafa is not a religion, there is no membership and is completely free of charge! It is a mind-body practice with a spiritual component that covers metaphysics, ethics and enlightenment. Through persistent practice one strives to achieve a state of selflessness, increased insight, inner purity, balance- true health and ultimately enlightenment. Since July 1999 the communist government of China has persecuted and enslaved millions of innocent people for practicing Falun Dafa and they comprise 65% of labor camps, detention centers and prisons across China for believing in Truth- Compassion- Forbearance. Evidence from acclaimed sources have proven tens of thousands of Falun Dafa practitioners to have been killed from live organ harvesting for China’s lucrative organ transplant market. So what do we, as an organization, do on campus? We meditate together and teach the exercises, promote cultural art events that revive traditional Chinese culture and raise awareness about the persecution and organ harvesting of Falun Dafa practitioners in China.

Students are given the unique chance to directly participate in “hands-on” diagnoses and treatments under the supervision of medical professionals. This is the reason why our motto is “LEARN BY DOING.” As a health-focused organization, our main purpose is to increase awareness of the lack of healthcare in third world countries by giving undergraduate students the chance to expand their understanding of life and medicine outside the United States. This is made possible by educating and exposing students to the prevalent global and medical issues that many underserved communities in developing countries face. Such issues include poverty, poor national health-care systems, and the various circumstances that contribute to and perpetuate a specific population’s situation. GMT also understands there are major health issues that reside right in our own community. It is this very reason why we also offer our students the opportunity to volunteer in various community service events including free health fairs servicing the underprivileged in the Los Angeles and surrounding counties. Altogether, GMT views student volunteers as a vital force for change. After all, they may be the next generation of health-care providers.

Hermanos Unidos de UCSD

Hermanos Unidos de UC San Diego will strive to create a welcoming and empowering brotherhood or “hermandad” amongst its members. Hermanos Unidos de UC San Diego will strive to attain this goal by embracing the three foundational pillars, which are stated in the Hermanos Unidos Constitution. “The three foundational pillars of Hermanos Unidos are Academic Scholarship, Community Service, and Social Networking. Academic Scholarship reflects the primary reason why an Hermano attends an institution of higher learning: to receive a quality education. Community Service represents an Hermano’s commitment to community involvement. Social Networking will seek to make the transition from high school/ community college to undergraduate life less traumatic and more meaningful for incoming Hermanos. Fulfilling the three pillars leads to the development of partnerships and alliances necessary for successfully accomplishing the mission of Hermanos Unidos. Thus, all three pillars should be approached with equal amount of concern, time, and intensity” -HU Constitution.

International QLGBT Union at UCSD

In order to support and accommodate international students who identify as queer/transgender, we are creating International Queer Union at UCSD. While loving our amazing LGBT Resource Center on UCSD campus, some of the queer/transgender-identified international students, who have been to their events/programs, have recognized the necessity of a safe space specifically designed for queer/transgender-identified international students. As our experiences/observations tell, it is significantly challenging for queer/transgender-identified international students to blend into queer/transgender-identified domestic students, especially at quarterly/annual/single-day events/programs, due to cultural and language barrier. Therefore, our main goals are, 1) to provide a safe space where queer/transgender-identified international students can comfortably connect to each other 2) to bridge domestic and international queer/transgender students by reducing the cultural/language barrier. Domestic students who are interested in knowing international queer/transgender students and learning their issues will be invited as a part of our organization as well. Thus, IQU will primarily be a social group, and our programs/events will be designed accordingly.
