Purpose
Our program focuses on breaking down the wall that separates those with disabilities from their non-disabled peers. It is unique in its unification of the peer-mentorship of young adults with mental and physical disabilities and their transitional community education. We primarily work with students ages 18-22 with disabilities through partnership with the Transitional Resources for Adult Community Education (TRACE) department of the San Diego Unified School District. Our student volunteers serve as teachers that target three critical areas imperative to independent living: communication, health awareness, and vocational skills. They also serve as mentors who participate in recreational activities and field trips that supplement the student’s community education. Our program is open to all UCSD undergraduates who are interested in empowering and bonding with other students their age with a wide range of disabilities.
